Caroling at the Care Center

My friend and neighbor, Kirsten, inviting me to join her and a small group of friends to go caroling with our kids at a nearby care center.  We sang songs and handed out cookies to the residence.

I has an amazing realization there today.
Perhaps this isn't new to anyone else, but for me it was new.

We sang a few songs, including Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.
All the songs we sang were popular holiday songs.
Rudolph was the only one the residents spontaneously joined in singing with us.

Most of the people at this care center weren't particularly old like many care centers. Most were simply disabled or handicapped just enough to need assistance.

As they sang, I realized that the song and story of Rudolph could mean so much. Growing up, I'm sure many of those people were made fun of, not included, or treated differently because of their disabilities. But it gives hope that just because you are different doesn't mean you don't have your own light to shine. A light that may shine brighter than perhaps any other light but it is overlooked or purposefully shunned because it is different or not popular.

I hope the residents of the care center got as much joy out of our visit as I got from them.
